Irksome In

August 16, 2006

I have to admit that not many things frustrate me in life, I am a reasonably calm individual most of the time. However, the English language with all its lies, does.
Take the word ‘in’ for example. There are so many ways to use the word. Yet, several of the ways are obscure and inaccurate. [...]

The Comma

June 27, 2006

I would like to give the greeting of “Hello” to you all before I begin today’s lesson. I have taken a shortish-longish break from The Sushi Files, because, quite frankly, I have a thing for commas, as I am sure you can tell. February 17, 2006

I hope that I am not lowering the tone here…but I most probably am. So please excuse me.
When one uses the colloquial expression ‘I am going to take a leak’ why is it that one says ‘take’? After all, one is in fact not taking it anywhere…if anything one is getting rid of it. Letting it go, [...]

Dustbunnies: One Word, or Two?

February 16, 2006

This is an interesting topic… everyone knows what Dustbunnies are, right? If you don’t then you’re stupid, but I’ll tell you anyway – they’re little balls of dirt and dust that collect under your furniture. “Collect what?” you might ask. Collect, as in to join together in harmony, aspiring  to create the world’s biggest ball [...]
